The Taker *The Taker Trilogy #1* by Alma Katsu

Synopsis:

True love can last an eternity . . . but immortality comes at a price. . . .

On the midnight shift at a hospital in rural Maine, Dr. Luke Findley is expecting another quiet evening of frostbite and the occasional domestic dispute. But the minute Lanore McIlvrae Lanny walks into his ER, she changes his life forever. A mysterious woman with a past and plenty of dark secrets, Lanny is unlike anyone Luke has ever met. He is inexplicably drawn to her . . . despite the fact that she is a murder suspect with a police escort. And as she begins to tell her story, a story of enduring love and consummate betrayal that transcends time and mortality, Luke finds himself utterly captivated.

Her impassioned account begins at the turn of the nineteenth century in the same small town of St. Andrew, Maine, back when it was a Puritan settlement. Consumed as a child by her love for the son of the town’s founder, Lanny will do anything to be with him forever. But the price she pays is steep;an immortal bond that chains her to a terrible fate for all eternity. And now, two centuries later, the key to her healing and her salvation lies with Dr. Luke Findley.

Part historical novel, part supernatural page-turner, The Taker is an unforgettable tale about the power of unrequited love not only to elevate and sustain, but also to blind and ultimately destroy, and how each of us is responsible for finding our own path to redemption.

The Taker [paperback edition] by Alma Katsu

My Thoughts:

4.5 twisted stars.

Warped and disturbing yet captivating and absolutely amazing.

Not for the faint at heart but a page turner for sure. This one you just have to read and form your own opinion.

Recent Reads

I have a weird tendency to read several books, start several different series at the same time. I am currently reading The Taker, book one in The Taker Trilogy, Amber House, book one in the Amber House series, and I just finished the first book in two other series. The first book was called Gifts of the Blood, book one in Angel’s Edge. I will start book two, Darkness in the Blood soon. I would have to give Gifts of the Blood about 3.5 stars. Good but not great. I am actually hoping things get better in the second book.

Image

I also just finished up Shadow and Blood, book one in The Grisha series by Leigh Bardugo. Let me just say that it is the latest addition to my favorite shelf… soooo good, no great… loved it. I rate Shadow and Blood with 5 very strong stars.

My Review:

I am a grown ass woman so I do not throw out the OMG very often. Actually not at all but there you have it… OMFG!! I have no idea as to how to go about this review. Let me collect myself and I’ll get back to you! And yes this is absolutely going on my favorite shelf!

I have had a moment to think about what to say and there just aren’t any words that I can come up with that do this book justice. To me it was real and deep, something that the young adult genre lacks a lot of. E. Lockhart has a beautiful, mesmorizing way with words. There were several passages through out this book that I highlighted not only because I wanted to share them with you but because I wanted to be able to look back and read them again and again and expierence the raw emotion that this book brought out of me. I decided that I will not share any of my favorite quotes or passages in this review like I had first intended. I am going to ask that you read this piece of art work for yourself because that is exactly what it is… ART! This is not a book you want to hear all about from someone else. This my fellow readers is a book you want to expierence all your own. And from my own personal experience, let me warn you, get ready for the tears!!

Cover Reveal for Fierce by Clarissa Wild

Title: Fierce
Author: Clarissa Wild
Publication Date: January 27th 2014
Genre: New Adult Romance

Fight for your dreams. Fight for your life. Fight for love.
Nerdy girl Autumn Blakewood is the prime example of a goodie two-shoes. She studies every night, is never late for class, and always follows the rules. She has never felt the need to step out of her comfort zone. That is, until she meets Hunter.
Hunter Bane is a cocky, confident bad-boy, who’s nothing but trouble. He’s a dangerous distraction to everyone around him. Sexy and strong, Hunter enjoys the swooning effect he has on women. Especially those who aren’t used to attention, like Autumn.
Autumn finds it hard not to give into Hunter’s advances, even though it all seems like a game to him. Trying to understand him is impossible, because he shrouds himself in mystery.
What she doesn’t know is that Hunter has more baggage than anyone should have to carry. When she discovers he’s in an illegal frat club to save the one person that matters to him, Autumn realizes this could mean the end of her undeniable connection to him. Even their lives are at risk.
But it’s too late to turn back now …

When he
comes up the steps, his gaze is already set on that one empty spot beside me.
I’m squeezing my legs together, as he sits next to me. My instinct is to scoot
far away, but I can’t; there’s nowhere to go.

I feel
watched, which isn’t strange, considering his gray eyes are practically trying
to penetrate my skin.
Anger is
seething inside him, I don’t have to look at him to know; I can feel it flow
out of him like a radiator that’s burning up.
God, I want
to die.
He keeps
staring at me, as if he has nothing better to do. My heartbeat is rising, and
I’m starting to feel really sweaty. I don’t know why he’s doing this, but it’s
freaking me out, and I don’t like it one bit.
“Don’t you
have to pay attention?” I say, avoiding his eyes.
“To You?
Yes.”
His words
make my insides broil.
“The
teacher has already started talking.” I point to the front, but Hunter doesn’t
even flinch. His eyes are still on me like a hawk zooming in on his prey.
“I don’t
care.”
I swallow,
gathering the courage to turn my head and look at him. The moment my eyes make
contact with his I’m drowning. Drowning in amazement. Drowning in fear.
Fear of the
unknown.
“But your
grades …” I stammer.
He snorts,
and a smile curls the corners of his mouth while he shakes his head. “Yeah,
right.”
And all I
can do is stare.
If looks
could kill, I would be dead.
He looks so
damn handsome when he smiles. It’s like everything around us fades and all I
ever want to see is that smile. It just makes me feel good.
But when
the smile disappears, so does my mood.
The
darkness falling over his face unsettles me.
In his eyes
I see the hurt, the worries, the insomnia. Sleepless nights have worn down his
face, making him look saggy and dull. But I know there’s so much more inside
there.
Endless
stories and an undiscovered world I’m intrigued by.
I want to
know what’s in there. Inside him. Why he’s so angry and sad at the same time.
A sudden
overwhelming feeling to grab him and hold him tight takes me aback.
He’s having
so much trouble in his life right now, even though I have no idea what’s going
on. I can see it in his eyes that something is so wrong. And I want to help him
get through it.
But I don’t
come any close. I don’t move one muscle.
I’m scared.
Scared of what he can do. Scared of his power, and his temper.
In my mind I
can still see his bloodshot eyes and the hateful look on his face. He was in
that fight yesterday, I’m sure of it. The only question is who was the one
instigating it.
I open my
mouth, but nothing comes out.
I can’t ask
him. I just can’t get the words to come out. I’m really chicken shit.
“Something
wrong?” he says.
I shake my
head.
“Then why
are you looking at me like that?”
Hunter
inches closer. I instinctively draw back, but he scoots even farther to my
side. I’m scared to death he wants to do something to me, and I have no idea
what, which makes it even scarier.
A devious
smile appears on his face, and it’s almost as if he’s enjoying this. Taunting
me seems like his way to pass time in class. I don’t like it one bit, but on
the other hand I’m excited as hell.
He raises
his head, and his nostrils flare. I turn my head, my breath hitching in my
throat. I can’t look when he’s doing this, entering my private space uninvited.
It feels as
though his nose is close to my hair, because there’s hot air flowing close to
my ear. And then he inhales.
Holy shit.
Is he
smelling me?
I’m frozen
in place from sheer panic, my heart beating like crazy.
No guy has
ever come this close to me.
He lets out
a huge breath afterward and chuckles softly. His breath lingers on my ear, and
a shudder runs through me.
“I like
it,” he whispers.
Oh. My.
Fucking. God.
My skin
tingles where his hot breath brushed over me. My groin clenches, and my clit thumps.
Why?
His whisper
does this to me. Just a whisper.
I never
felt like this before. I think just died inside.
Hunter
muffles a laugh. It’s like he can smell my fear.
He takes in
a sharp breath and moves back to his usual spot. As if what he did just now was
the most normal thing in the world.
I’m still
shaken, my body stiff from the encounter. I feel completely naked, and I know
he’s watching me.
The look in
his eyes is like that of a boy who just did something totally against the
rules. And it’s so fucking sexy I can’t stand it.

The Lost Boys by Lilian Carmine

cover39794-medium

Synopsis:

An intensely addictive romance novel about girls, ghosts, and forbidden love, ideal for fans of Stephenie Meyer  Fate has brought them together. But will it also keep them apart? Having moved to a strange town, 17-year-old Joey Gray is feeling a little lost, until she meets a cute, mysterious boy near her new home. But there’s a very good reason why Tristan Halloway is always to be found roaming in the local graveyard. Perfect for fans of Stephenie Meyer and Lauren Kate, The Lost Boys is a magical, romantic tale of girl meets ghost.

 My Review:

First I have to say that after reading the synopsis for the The Lost Boys and even in it’s beginning stages I was really excited for this book. After reading the first 15/20% I just knew it was going to be amazing, possibly end up on the favorite shelf. Yeah.. not going to happen. I got the exact opposite reaction of what I was expecting.

Joe Gray moves to a new town with her mother and then one day she decides to take a walk in her new town, long story short she ends up in a graveyard where she meets a boy whom she has no idea is actually a ghost. They become friends and then somehow Joe ends being able to do a spell that brings him back to life without even realizing or knowing how she done so. Anyway it’s a basic tale of girl meets boy, boy meets girl… blah, blah, blah.

I guess I was under the impression of this book being more on the fantasical side when really the only thing you actually read in the book that is fantasy/paranormal/magic is at the beginning and more towards the end. The middle is just fluffed up with a whole bunch of high school drama… well suppose to be high school. Sometimes the way these kids acted and talked throughout the book actually caused me to be embarrassed for them! Yes, in my head I was going Oh my god, did they really just say/do that. If there had not been a little bit of cursing and a few sexual scenes I would definitely say this book was middle school.

I will admit that there was one instance in which there were a tear or two brought to my eyes but that was it. Needless to say I wanted so much more from this book. I guess I just had my expectations set to high from all the wonderful reviews I read about it beforehand. I have no idea where all the praise comes from. I feel like I read an entirely different book!

Synopsis:

When sixteen-year old Jacey Adison’s parents tell her they must move again, she has never questioned their life style. Until now. When Jacey was two, her parents fled the protection of their birthplace, the mystical dimension of Nemele. Leaving was the only solution her parents believed might allow them to keep their family together and alive. The Adisons have been running from a sect of iniquitous beings from Nemele who covet Jacey. Her parents have repressed their adversaries’ relentless tracking efforts by not utilizing their own mystical powers. They have chosen to conceal themselves within the only realm they knew they’d be able to survive. They are living under their self-imposed powerless sanctions on Earth, which constitutes the nineteenth nation of Nemele. Her parents have never revealed their true identities to Jacey, consequently keeping her true lineage and unique birthright from her. Jacey’s family has pretended to be non-magical humans as a ploy to prevent an ancient omnipotent entity from killing more innocent beings in its relentless quest to possess Jacey. Born as an anomaly, Jacey possesses rare abilities that both virtuous and corrupt entities seek to use as their own. Should either side prevail, Jacey may be the saviour or downfall of every world within Nemele’s domains. Blindly thrust into life and death situations, Jacey learns of her true powers within her dreaming and conscious states.

My Review:

I just stayed awake until 2 a.m. to finish this book.. needless to say full review will come later. Here are just a few words I will leave you with for now.. different, intriguing, mystical, magical, heartfelt, a breath of fresh air in the paranormal genre, and hell why not… a little bit strange! Now good night or good morning, whatever. I’m going to bed!

I’m not going to add much because.. well you can read the synopsis to find out what the book is about and I think I pretty much said all that needed to be said in the words above. Yes there are some things about this book that people will not like. For me personally I did not really care for the lame ‘all in due time’ bs that Jacey kept getting from her family and friends when she questioned what was happening to her or the fact that she could be sooo clueless at times but I believe that most books you read are going to have something that annoys you. This is a wonderful read with one hell of an amazing ending! I can’t wait for Elemental #2!!
